David Lynch Standing Out with His Signature look

We have all seen many celebrities who have a signature look, who wear the same kind of clothes day after day so often that it becomes a part of them. It becomes their uniform, their identity. This uniform look can be very stylish if done right.

One such celebrity who has a uniform look is the American filmmaker, painter, musician, actor and photographer David Lynch. You may know David Lynch from his critically acclaimed movies, such as Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, and TV show “Twin Peaks.”

David Lynch has always had an eye for fashion. Who can forget Nicolas Cage’s stylish attire from Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” or just any costume from “Dune”? From the beginning, David Lynch’s movies had interesting costume designs; it was only a matter of time that people started acknowledging his own fashion sense. His look eventually caught the media’s attention, and GQ called his distinctive style “the David Lynch look.” Lynch got so involved with fashion that, in 2014, he designed a sportswear collection for women.

David Lynch’s incredibly stylish but modest look mainly consists of a plain light shirt, usually white, buttoned all the way up to the neck and a black suit or jacket. He puts on a tie if the occasion demands. This trend has been around for many years. It died down, and, thanks to David Lynch, it is gradually returning now. While talking about his look, it would be a heinous crime not to mention his magnificent hair. David Lynch is also famous for his striking pompadour hairstyle, so much so that it has been compared with famous paintings like Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night. With all this and a coffee mug in his hand, David Lynch’s look screams that he’s a fashionable director. A few simple things together give Lynch a look that helps him to stand out from others.

There are no hard and fast rules for this look; anybody can wear what they feel comfortable in. However, if anybody wants to do it exactly like Lynch does it, there are some things they should keep in mind. To pull of “the David Lynch look,” you should:

  • Not wear a button-down shirt buttoned to the collar without a tie.
  • Wear a soft collar shirt as it looks better, when buttoned up, than a conventional dress shirt with a stiff collar.
  • Spread the collar and not make it.
