Searching for the Right Overcoat this Winter

Punxsutawaney Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter, so you might need to hold on to your winter wear. If you have a worn-out overcoat, you might need help replacing it. We at HDS can help you pick out an overcoat; in case finding an overcoat proves to be daunting, or if you just want to switch it up.

The first thing to consider is the type of style of overcoat you’d like. Ideally, you would choose a more versatile coat -- one that you could wear formally and casually. We recommend the paletot, the chesterfield and the trench coat.

The Paletot

The paletot overcoat is a timeless look that goes well with just about anything. The paletot overcoat is a timeless look that goes well with just about anything.

Overcoats should either be ankle-length or knee-length. The paletot is the first coat that comes to mind when we think of coats that go down to the knee. Understated, the paletot is easily the most versatile type of coat, and can be worn to anything like weddings, work or casual events.

A paletot will come with a peak lapel, have a flat back, no belt and are double breasted, with a 6x2 button arrangement. Top buttons on the coat are spaced out wider and are not to be buttoned at all.

The Chesterfield

The chesterfield coat is another versatile coat. A chesterfield is a little looser in its fit. The chesterfield is made with heavier fabric, great for keeping warm. However, there is no general consensus to what the material has to be and it can be made of tweed or flannel. Since the chesterfield is one of the oldest types of coat, there are many conflicting views as to what else makes a chesterfield distinctive other than the aforementioned characteristics and the optional use of velvet in the collar. These coats can go down to the knee or the ankle.

The Trench Coat

Trench coats have been around for nearly a hundred years! Talk about an enduring style! Trench coats have been around for nearly a hundred years! Talk about an enduring style!

The trench coat is not just for private eyes anymore. The trench coat has found more acceptance in casual wear, as well as enjoying the status as a go-to overcoat for businessmen. Compared to the paletot and the chesterfield, the trench coat normally comes with a belt. However, modern takes on the trench coat ditches the belt in favor for similar belt straps. The trench coat normally is roomier than the paletot but better fitted than the chesterfield. They also come normally in a khaki color but newer coats can also come in black or navy.

Feel free to try any of these overcoats! These are tried-and-true styles that look great no matter what the occasion is. Stay warm and fashionable!
