Be Ready for the Job Market

Graduating from college is a huge accomplishment. However, this accomplishment is just the first step of climbing up the never-ending career ladder. Here are some tips on how to get set for your first entry into the job market.

Obstacles on the Job Market

The statistics speak for themselves: For every job position that opens up, 172 people apply on average, says Lewis Talbot, CEO of City Internships. That means you will have to compete with more or less 171 other people for each and every job you apply to. About 2.8 Million young men and women graduate from College or University every year, many of them not finding a job straight away. Be sure to be prepared the right way for the job market. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

Do Internships

It might sound appalling to you right now, but working at different companies as an intern has several advantages. Firstly, you’ll get real-world experience, that you can use when working in the future. Secondly, you have looked into different industries and get a better grip on what you really want to be doing for the rest of your life. And thirdly, maybe the most important part: You have a platform to network. Networking is becoming more and more important in today’s business world, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to meet as many people as possible and get their business cards.

Behaviors for Success

Be curious. Try to learn as much as possible when doing an internship or when still going to university or college. You’re probably thinking right now: Duh, that’s what my parents tell me all the time. But it is true. You need to acquire as many hard and soft skills as possible.

Communicate. This is related to networking. Talk to as many people as possible, show your poise and integrity with any audience.

Collaborate. Don’t try to achieve everything by yourself, let others help and teach you. Even though you have or will shortly finish a degree, there is still so much that hasn’t grasped your attention yet. Work together with professionals to achieve your goals.

Dress for success. Even if you feel insecure about your future on the inside, you shouldn’t reflect that to your outside. Aim for a look that is appropriate for any business, a suit is always a good idea. You will feel much better about yourself when in a clean and fresh outfit that accentuates your best features.
