Shatnez

Shatnez (or shaatnez) is cloth containing both wool and linen (linsey-woolsey), which Jewish law, derived from the Torah, prohibits wearing.

We realize that we have customers wearing our suits from all walks of life, and we want to cater to each. We are proud to sell suits that adhere to Shatnez, for those who uphold the law.

Shatnez is as difficult to interpret from a linguistic standpoint as it is to observe in everyday life. Many linguists believe Shatnez be an acrostic of the hebrew words for “combed”, “spinning” and “twisted”, while others claim its derivation from Arabic and others from Coptic Egyptian. While neither have been universally accepted, the law of Shatnez remains quite clear. It states that the wool of a sheep may not be mixed with linen and worn. Shatnez is found in two passages in the Torah where it is defined as the mixture of wool and linen within the fabrics of one’s clothing. First in Leviticus 19:19, “...Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind; thou shalt not sow thy field with two kinds of seed; neither shall there come upon thee a garment of two kinds of stuff mingled together.” Secondly, Shatnez is mentioned in Deuteronomy 22:11, “Thou shalt not wear mingled stuff, wool and linen together.”

Shatnez is a chok, which means it is a law given without reason. Even still, here at Hundred Dollar Suits, we realize that many who adhere to the Jewish faith observe shatnez in their lives. Be assured that none of our suits contain a wool and linen mixture. Our suits are made of pure wool or a bled of for example 65% Rayon Viscose and 35% Dacron. None of our garments, nor the factories contain or handle linen. We invite you to test our suits with your rabbi if you seek further validity, and if our suits do not adhere to your standards, please let us know and we will gladly issue a refund.
